Utterings are six artists from very different backgrounds that gather online and, while blindfolded, engage in utterings as communication, building on solos, duos, chorals and silence. We try to develop an on the fly “new” language that forwards attention, trust and feeling above rationality. Put another way, we seek to develop a shared, experiential, supra-semiotic form of communication based on our ongoing performance history with each other. The active interlaced communicative structure, mediated by machines, cables and compression algorithms, is not driven by efficacy, nor ruled by code or conventions, but seeks connection through affection, attention, glitches, delays and even voids. Humans and machines are involved in a process of shared auditory exchange and attention.

We wear blindfolds to resist distraction by the intimate imagery our bodies produce in the interface, and focus on listening and other bodily perceptions. To go beyond habits and automatisms, we use individual sound and movement triggers that change the overall system and keep us alert.

Since we started in 2019 we have done 7 different online performances, three workshops and a conference panel. We have an online research archive with notes, reflexions, quotes, photos, audio- and video recordings.
Each iteration of Utterings experiments specific issues in regard to audio, video and the venue itself.

utterings is not something that can get better over time

utterings is what it is, determined by individuals and their surroundings, the time of the day, by what they did before, and how they feel
utterings is a confrontation with voices, that are other, it's an always new meeting

a commitment to life living

"utterings is... sad and a pity."
Not usually, but always a possibility.

utterings is... a good possibility that things might turn out otherwise.
